Every baby has a unique movement pattern. Learning yours is what matters most.
| Situation | What It Means | Action |
|---|---|---|
| 10 kicks in under 30 min | Very active, healthy movement | ✓ No action needed |
| 10 kicks in 30–60 min | Normal range | ✓ All good |
| 10 kicks in 1–2 hours | Within acceptable window | ✓ Within guideline |
| Fewer than 10 kicks in 2 hours | May warrant evaluation | 📞 Contact provider |
| Sudden decrease vs. your normal | Change in pattern is key sign | 📞 Contact provider |
| No movement for several hours | Needs immediate evaluation | 📞 Call immediately |
🚨 When to Call Your Provider
- Fewer than 10 movements in 2 hours — even once
- Your baby's movement feels noticeably different from usual
- No movement felt for 12+ hours
- A kick count that was previously easy now takes over an hour
- Your gut tells you something is off — trust it
Starting Kick Counts at 28 Weeks
Most care providers recommend beginning daily kick counts around 28 weeks — the start of the third trimester. Before 28 weeks, movement is often sporadic and harder to count reliably.
From 28 weeks onward, your baby has a more developed sleep-wake cycle. You'll start to notice patterns: active times (often evening, after meals), quieter times (when baby is sleeping). Learning your baby's personal rhythm is the whole point of kick counting.
- Do kick counts at the same time each day when possible
- After meals works well — blood sugar rise tends to increase movement
- Most babies are most active in the evening (9–11 PM)
- Babies sleep in 20–40 minute cycles — wait out a quiet spell before worrying
If your baby usually hits 10 kicks in 15 minutes, a day where it takes 45 minutes isn't necessarily alarming — but a day where it takes 2 hours when the baseline is 15 minutes is worth a call.
