Complete Pregnancy Guide · Weeks 1–40
Everything happening inside — baby's size, development milestones, and what your body is doing — for every single week of pregnancy. Written by a COPE-certified birth doula.
The first trimester is the most dramatic transformation in the least visible way. Your baby goes from a single fertilized cell to a fully formed human with beating heart, functioning organs, fingers, toes, and facial features — all while you may barely look pregnant. Most miscarriage risk occurs here, which is why most providers schedule early ultrasounds between weeks 8–12.
Symptoms — nausea, exhaustion, sore breasts, frequent urination — are at their worst during this trimester, usually easing around week 12–14. Don't let anyone tell you it's "just morning sickness." It's your body doing extraordinary work.
The second trimester is often called the "honeymoon phase" of pregnancy — and for most people, that's genuinely earned. Nausea fades, energy returns, and the pregnancy starts becoming visible and real. You'll feel baby move for the first time (quickening), and anatomy scans around week 18–20 give you the clearest picture yet of your baby's development.
This is the best window to take a prenatal class, set up your birth plan, and enjoy pregnancy before the third trimester's physical demands arrive. Use it intentionally.
The third trimester is all about preparation — yours and baby's. Baby is gaining weight rapidly (about half a pound per week in the final stretch), getting into position, and maturing lung function. You'll feel more tired, more uncomfortable, and more ready than ever. That's the point.
Use this trimester to finalize your birth plan, pack your hospital bag, install the car seat, and take one last deep breath as a family of however many you currently are. Full term begins at 39 weeks. Most babies arrive between 38 and 41 weeks.
